‘The Drop: A Snowfall Saga’ Brings Wanda and Leon Into the Rise of West Coast Rap
FX’s new series shifts the Snowfall universe from the crack-era drug trade toward the music business and the cultural power of 1990s Los Angeles hip-hop.
The Snowfall universe has officially expanded with The Drop: A Snowfall Saga, an FX series centered on Wanda Bell and Leon Simmons as they attempt to reinvent themselves through the emerging West Coast rap industry. The series premiered September 8, 2026, on FX and Hulu.
The new drama moves the franchise into 1990s Los Angeles, where the fallout from the crack epidemic intersects with a rapidly changing music scene. FX’s official description frames the series around the transition “from the dope game to the rap game,” placing questions of ambition, ownership and cultural influence at the center of the story.
Gail Bean and Isaiah John return as Wanda and Leon, characters whose next chapter gives the franchise a different engine from the original series. Rather than focusing primarily on the mechanics of narcotics distribution, The Drop examines how artists, hustlers and industry operators compete to shape the sound and business of a new era.
That premise gives the spinoff a potentially important cultural lane. West Coast rap was not simply a soundtrack to 1990s Los Angeles; it became a vehicle for regional identity, political expression, entrepreneurship and national influence. The series places Black music-making inside the same contested social landscape that defined Snowfall.
FX has released official key art, a trailer and an after-show podcast featuring Bean and John. With the premiere now available, the project is positioned as one of the season’s clearest attempts to extend a prestige crime franchise while redirecting its focus toward Black popular culture and the commercial forces surrounding it.
